RE: Do performance mods make a worthwhile difference?

jeez if we should be concerned with payback why did we buy a RV ?? We have several that alway hollar snake oil or won't work or.............../etc and never used the product. The question is "do performance mods make a difference". What diffrences were needed or desired ?? Everyone has their own needs or desires when it comes to refueling boxes for our new gen diesels. I don't see how this answered any question of the original poster or offered an ounce of value. LOL guess I could make the same lame statement as your post did but I think both of my replies were to his request of opinions on performance mods and worth while differences with the new gen diesels. Apparantly you disagree with both my posts. If you want to continue to hyjack the OP thred PM me and we can discuss your problems as I'm sure the OP isn't interested. Jim

RE: Sports Chassis VS. other MDT

a 3500 DRW Ford or Dodge have some of the higher RAWR (9350 lbs for the Dodge) which leaves over 5500+ lbs for a payload. Well within any 15k trailer of any type. Moving up to a 4500 Dodge which has a 7000 FAWR and a 12000 RAWR would be overkill for just a 15k trailer. Ford and Dodge have simular axle numbers. Now if your trying to convince the wife a new MDT or even a HDT is needed then heck yes that 3500 DRW is to small. I drive a Cummins in a Dodge but any of the new gen diesels will work. Jim

RE: Can the GVWR be increased?

(snip) I have no towing issues. In fact the thing tows like a dream. We have towed the 5er on two major (over 3000 miles) trips so far and a number of < 100 mile weekend trips. But the truck is new and overtime that could change. My question was more if I could add something to the system that would raise the GVWR number so I was under all values. Thanks all, Eric adding suspension upgrades won't change or affect GVWR BUT they help with GAWRs to level the load. Lots of confusion on what GVWR job is and what GAWRs job is and how our states use those numbers. To many assume GVWR carries the load. If having a higher GVWR number makes you feel better about your truck, stop by your local tax office and uprate your trucks GVWR according to TX 621 state motor vehicle laws. According to the same reg they allow a 5 percent above max GVWR tolarance anyway. The five percent tolarance allows you 10500 for your GVWR. I certainly wouldn't add anything to your truck or would I worry with being a few over GVWR as it is upratable in TX. BUT as long as your under 6100 RAWR, which they also allow a 5 percent tolarance above 6100, your well under the real weight numbers for your truck. Jim

RE: FIfth Wheel Subjects Flashing

dial up here and only did it one day. Yeah sometimes the spell checker won't work/boot but thats ok as it doesn't spell check as good as this old man can spell. It wanted me to change balancing to blanching. LOL

RE: good year trailer tires.

(snip) So you are saying not to balance steel wheels-which is my spare? I have always felt that you make knowledgeable, sensible and experienced posts and have learned a lot from you. I suspect that we will now see a lot of opposing views? My reply is not intended to be a negative comment on your post and will shortly P.M. you on recommendations on replacement tires for my 2006 D/A crew cab..:C I didn't say not to balance your trailer wheels but only brought that concentric point up as to why the tire shop used two different weight and still may not be a good balanced trailer wheel. I didn't want to start another balance the trailer tire and opinions. A tire dealer showed me how out of round the wheel flange is to the lugs were to each other and were (not concentric) the reasons he didn't recommend balancing trailer tires. ====================================================================== the blur hub centered requires a hub with a machined protrusion/flange that the wheels center fits on. Most trailer hubs don't have that protrusion or flange so the trailer wheel has a large cutout in the center. Jim

RE: Blew bearing...

if the stub/spindle has turned blue from all the heat don't reuse the stub/spindle. Axle stubs/spindles are heat treated to a certain spec and to much heat may soften it. As others say contact a trailer (all types) repair facility in your area for the best way to go. Jim

RE: Oil Changes When how often? Diesel Puller

follow GM recommendation on oil change schedules for your DMAX. 3k and 5k is for older engines and is a waste of money/resourse on the newer gen engines. From '03 to '07 Dodge Cummins has a 7500/15000 oil change schedue however the new DPF engines may have a shorter milage number but all use a DIC for when to change the oil/filter. Jim.

RE: good year trailer tires.

Good move but they don't have the load carrying capacity that I need. Took my Denman spare back to Tire Kingdom yesterday and told them I did not like the 7+ ounces of weight. They assured me that they lug centered balanced the tire. I had them check again. It was not lug centered balanced. Tire was rebalanced again and weight is now 2 ounce. Same as when the Marathon was on it. There are several posters on here that say to have them lug centered balanced and I have in the past but did not request it this time. trailer wheels are lug centered BUT the lugs are not concentric with the wheels mounting flange. Thats why tire shops that have been around the trailer industry awhile simple don't recommend balancing a trailer tire unless the customer insists. Balance a steel trailer wheel/tire assembly and then rotate 45/90 or 180 degrees and mount it back on the trailer hub and it will more than likely still be unbalanced. Well made aluminum trailer wheel tire mounting flange may be concentric to the lugs. Automotive wheels are center hole located to a machined flange on a axle and can be balanced for any position on the hub. Jim

RE: Can the GVWR be increased?

(snip) Remember, the "R" in GVWR, GAWR, and GCWR stands for "RATING". This is a manufacturer's number game, and has no force of law in many States. You only have to comply with YOUR State laws, but it IS up to YOU to know what your laws are! Good luck. He's in TX and those R's in GVWR (unless uprated) and GAWRs have full force of TX and fed law. Looking at your state towing regs 61-10-233 excess weights-penalties says GVWR can be raised in lieu of unloding "provided that it does not exceed the legal axle weight".

RE: Jacking up a fiver

no problems with jacking under the axle next to the U bolt or the U bolt itself. Never saw a bent axle from jacking this way. I use a heavy steel channel about 6" long under the axle (upside down so it acts as a cradle) to keep it from slipping. I certainly wouldn't jack against a spring leaf if your trailer is heavy. Use the search function in all the trailering forums on this web for many pages of reading on jacking a trailer. Jim

RE: Rear Kitchen...love em or hate em?

ask the question using RB/RK/RL and you have those that prefere them. Get the floorplan you like and go RV'n. Use the search function and it will have many pages of reading. Were on our 2nd RK. Both units had suspension shocks and have had zero problems with anything ever bouncing out of cabinets. Our 1st 5er was a '84 rear bath model with no shocks. Just about every trip the med cabinet on the rear wall, would be in the floor till I tied the door closed. Even the refrig door came open and it was in the center of the trailer. Jim

RE: Lt tires

just to add to socal posts is a D or E will be overkill for towing with P tire on your truck pulling your small TT. The LT C load range at 50 psi is a better upgrade for your size truck. I'll upgrade my wifes 1500 Chev 5.3 4x4 crew cab truck from P to LT C before winter. Jim

RE: Can the GVWR be increased?

Eric TX is a state that your GVWR can be registered to a higher rating which is why LEO (commercial and non commercial) weighs this class of trucks using FAWR/RAWR/matching tire caps. Check with your DPS or your tag office if you can take advantage of that GVWR uprate program. My state has such a program for commercial haulers that can meet one of three criteria tax wise. I can meet one of those criteria so I always register my 2500 trucks GVWR at the sum of my FAWR/RAWR. Contact your DPS. Jim

RE: Do performance mods make a worthwhile difference?

intake or exhaust mods is a waste of money for just a 40-60 HP towing box. Now if your into tire melting 150 hp+ and 400+ torque gains (above stock) then many other components will need to be upgraded. I added EGT/boost gage to a previous '01 2500 Dodge/Cummins and a 40-60 HP box to stir up the underpowerd 235/460 Cummins. It did the trick. No other mods were needed for that small refueling box and all for less the 500 bucks. Those small hp boxes are popular with commercail haulers as at 10-12 mpgs towing everyday in excess of 26k, a 2 mpg gain (20 percent) is great. I don't have the DMAX but with just stock 305/555 my '03 Cummins HO NV5600 handles my 11200 GVWR 5er with ease and gets great mpg's. Lots of different hp boxes available out there to choose from. Jim

RE: Truck Carrying Capacity - Dodge 2500

MTBob we load our trucks by using GAWR's/matched tire caps. If I'm not mistaking MT is one of the states that allows uprate GVWR registration for your truck. Looking at Montana code 61-10-233 at the end of para 2 reads "provided that registered GVWR does not exceed the legal axle weight". My previous tow truck, '01 2500 Dodge/Cummins, had a 6064 RAWR. The trucks rear when empty weighed about 2700 lbs whic leaves 3360 lbs (est) for my legal payload. One thing for sure if GVWR is used as a payload figure it will be way under under any legal towing regs. If its a concern for you I would contact the state the truck is registered in for their input on GAWR's vs GVWR for weighing any 2500 truck. Stay under axle and tire caps. Jim

RE: What gear do you tow in?

although my 2500 2wd Dodge/Cummins 6 speed manual pulls the 11200 GVWR 5er in OD just fine I use my wifes 1500 CC 3.73 axle 4x4 5.3 when its muddy to pull my 18' implement trailer and tractor with a FEL/box blade/7' mower which weighs around 9000 lbs and tow with the tranny in 3rd. Your max loaded, and maybe over, so yeah that little 5.3 is going to be screaming in the hills. Jim

RE: half ton towable sundance?? can i tow it

you didn't say what your trucks RAWR was as it carries the load. I'm guessin' the actual pin weight of this size 5er will put you over the 1500 RAWR. I have a 28' 5er that has a advertised dry weight of 8600 lbs but actual road ready with just the bare necessities it weighs 10200 lbs. The GVWR is 11200. You need to be looking at a trailers GVWR as that will be closer to actual loaded weight. Jim
